Two Questions That Can Change How You Lead
Here’s something I’ve learned as a Leadership Coach: the questions we ask ourselves often matter more than the answers we give.
So this week, I invite you to sit with two deceptively simple ones:
👉 Who do you admire the most – and why?
👉 Who should you admire more – but don’t (yet)? And why is that?
These questions deserve deep self-reflection. They aren’t about creating a leadership vision board of perfect people. They’re about pausing for self-reflection, and tapping into the values and traits that inspire you – and, at the same time, identifying the ones that challenge you.
Admiration of others can often show us what we aspire to. Maybe you admire someone’s courage, their empathy, or the way they hold people accountable with kindness. That’s insight into what you value – and also insight into what you might want to cultivate more of in your own leadership.
The second question? Well, that one tends to sting. It invites honest reflection which might come with a little discomfort (Hello, Growth!). Maybe it’s someone whose style rubs you the wrong way – but deep down in that honest reflection, you realise and know they’ve got something you could learn from. Or maybe it’s a trait like structure, patience or vulnerability that you undervalue… because it’s not your natural strength. Yet.
These questions don’t need quick answers. Let them simmer. Come back to them over several days. Journal about them. Bring them into your team conversations.
They’re little doorways into leadership behaviours you can choose to develop, rather than inherit by default.
And if you’re curious about how your reflections could shape your next steps as a leader – reach out. Let’s chat. I love this stuff.
Because who you admire might just be pointing you toward the leader you’re becoming.
