Ever feel like your evenings vanish into thin air, leaving little energy for family, friends, or even yourself? Yep. Me too! Last week, we talked about managing daytime fatigue by taking time out, disconnecting from all the touchpoints and staying hydrated.
This is great however leaves the question: How can you truly switch off that exhaustion at the end of the day and genuinely reconnect with yourself, family and friends?
Here are five practical ways to rise above cognitive fatigue, recharge effectively, and bring your best energy to those you care about most – every evening, not just weekends! I use these and share them with my coaching clients, so I know that they work – as long as you are deliberate about implementing them.
1. Create a Transition Ritual
Imagine a clear boundary between your workday and personal life. It could be changing into comfy clothes, savouring your favourite tea, or enjoying your current playlist for a few songs. Simple rituals which tell your brain, “Work’s done – time for me!”
2. Set Clear Boundaries Around Technology
Be brave! Turn off those work notifications and put all of your devices out of sight for a dedicated window of time – start with during dinner or family time. Get your family and friends to join you in this. What I love is that even 30 minutes of tech-free interaction can massively boost your emotional connections and begin to reduce all that mental clutter you have been dealing with during the day.

3. Practice Intentional Listening
Quality conversations energize relationships – no matter what the age of the person you are talking with. Make a deliberate effort to truly listen – ask open-ended questions, maintain eye contact, give them time to share their thoughts and engage fully. When any of us feel truly heard, it deepens emotional bonds and creates positive interactions.
4. Incorporate Play and Movement
Movement isn’t just for kids – I find that it’s an instant energy booster for adults too! Whether it’s a quick stroll, a playful game outside, or even dancing around your living room, physical activity sparks endorphins and shakes off residual stress. One of my favourites is cranking up the music with a favourite song and loudly singing along while practicing dance moves. Changes my mood instantly. Try Joe Cocker “With A Little Help From My Friends”
5. Express Gratitude Together
Make sure to end your day positively. Journal or share something you’re grateful for or proud of – invite your family and friends to join in. Gratitude quickly shifts perspective, boosts your mood, and builds emotional resilience for everyone involved. Remember, life’s way too short for you to feel drained and disconnected every single evening after a full day at work.
