You don’t need to keep explaining yourself.
You know when you’ve said it clearly, calmly, respectfully… and somehow you’re still explaining?
Again.
Not because the other person genuinely wants to understand. But because you’re still hoping the next sentence will make them agree, soften, approve, or finally see your intention.
This is one of the quiet ways we give our power away.
Not in the first explanation. Sometimes clarity matters. Context matters. Repairing the situation matters.
But the fourth, fifth, sixth explanation? That can become something else. And that may not be something that serves you because it becomes a way of saying, “Please don’t think badly of me.”
The reality is, not everyone who questions you is seeking clarity. Some people are protecting their version of the story. Some, deliberately or without realising it, are committed to misunderstanding you because it keeps them comfortable, right, or in control.
And when you keep feeding that, you move from communication into justification.
So, here’s the question:
Are you explaining because it is useful or because you cannot stand being disliked?
