Words That Work: How To Sound Confident Rather Than Cautious

It’s that time of year when everyone’s running on caffeine, deadlines, and Christmas playlists on repeat.

Which means if you want your words to land – in meetings, emails, or at the dinner table – they’ve got to cut through the noise.

Something I know for sure is this: People don’t just listen to what you say. They listen to how you say it.
Which means that if your language is padded with justs, maybes, and sorrys, you sound uncertain – even when you’re not.

This isn’t about sounding bossy. It’s about sounding believable.

To get your message across instead of using complicated language, use clear language. And clarity is what creates confidence – for you and for those who are listening.

Here are some simple swaps that shift you from hesitant to credible:

💬 Instead of: “I just wanted to check if…”
Try: “I’m checking in about…”

💬 Instead of: “Sorry, can I say something?”
Try: “I’d like to add something here.”

💬 Instead of: “Does that make sense?”
Try: “How does that sound to you?”

💬 Instead of: “I’ll try to…”
Try: “I’ll have it to you by Friday.”

Small shifts. Big difference.

Because when your words are clean, your message is clear –  and your presence strengthens.
That’s how you build quiet authority without ever raising your voice.

My coaching to you to to practice speaking with intention. Every word is a reflection of your confidence, not your calendar.

✨ As we slide into the final stretch of the year, remember this – your words set the tone. Whether you’re in a boardroom, at a barbecue, or navigating the Christmas chaos, clear, confident communication still matters.
Look out for my pre-Christmas email where I’m talking about something just as important – keeping your boundaries (and your calm) intact over Christmas. It’s a good one to read before the festive noise really does kick in.

Take care of your energy – you’ll need it for the fun stuff ahead.  And if you are ready to sharpen your voice and speak with more confidence – at work and at home? Let’s connect.
