We all want to feel connected to others and it is especially great to feel trusted and valued. And yet it can be so easy to expect to be trusted automatically and continuously.
We forget that it’s all about how you connect with others through your words, energy, and everyday conversations.
What is awesome is that the smallest phrases can and do have the biggest impact.
Let’s start with this gem: “What do you think?”
It’s deceptively simple – but incredibly powerful. When you use this phrase (and mean it), you signal two things:
✔️ You value other people’s input
✔️ You’re not the only one with good ideas
Whether it’s with your team, your partner, or your kids, inviting someone’s perspective opens the door to trust, collaboration, and deeper dialogue. It shifts the dynamic from “I talk, you listen” to “We think this through together.”
The other phrase I absolutely love?
“I could be wrong, but…”
What I love about this is that is softens your position while making the space for other ideas and showing that you’re open to feedback. It lets others know “Here’s my perspective – but I’m not wedded to it.”
I’ve been asked if saying you could be wrong makes you look uncertain, and my response is always that it shows you are confident enough to ask for help and to invite new insight from others while being willing to contribute to the discussion. You are demonstrating your emotional intelligence.
Authentically using these two phrases will build trust because they encourage curiosity and contribute to a sense of psychological safety. Plus, they remind others that conversation is a shared experience, not a one-person performance, and that it is safe to speak up.
Here’s the real bonus: These phrases will work beautifully at home, too. Our kids, partners, friends and family all respond better when they feel heard, respected, and included. Give it a try!!
My coaching challenge to you this week is to deliberately use these two phrases:
🗣️ Ask: “What do you think?”
🤝 Share: “I could be wrong, but…”
And then… pause. Listen. Let the magic happen.
If you’re ready to deepen your communication and lead with more trust, clarity, and Leadership intelligence, I’d love to support you. Let’s connect.
