Let’s talk micromanagement.
You might think you’re being helpful. Supportive. “Just checking in.”
However, if your team flinches every time you “pop by”… you just might be micromanaging.
You see hovering over tasks, giving instructions that sound more like an Ikea manual, rewriting emails, or “fixing” things that were already fine sends one very loud message……..
“I don’t trust you to do this without me.”
And trust me, your team hears it. Loud and clear.
🙃 Productivity drops.
🙃 Confidence tanks.
🙃 Morale? Somewhere under your to-do list.
It doesn’t just slow your team down. It kills initiative and breeds a quiet sense of discontent.
The best leaders don’t stand over people. They stand with them. They set the direction, define the outcome, then get the hell out of the way.
Still convinced this doesn’t apply to you?
Let’s take it home for a second.
🧼 Do you re-stack the dishwasher “properly”?
🧺 Do you redo the laundry folding the towels just “the right way”?
📚 Do you hover over your kid’s homework guiding them through every. Single. Maths. Question?
Yep. That’s micromanaging too.
It’s not leadership. It’s control with a side of criticism and it chips away at confidence just the same.
So here’s your coaching nudge:
💡 At work: Give clarity on what needs to be done, not how.
💡 At home: Let the towels stay imperfectly folded. No one died.
On the flip side… if you’re the one being micromanaged make sure to communicate like a pro.
Keep your updates clear, frequent, and proactive. Show you’re across it, capable, and in control.
Because true leadership, whether at home or in the office, is about trust, not having a tight grip.
So go ahead: let go a little.
You might just be surprised by what (and who) rises.
If you’re ready to stop doing all the things and start empowering your team – or your family – with clarity and calm confidence, reach out. xx
