From Passive to Powerful: Rethinking “It Is What It Is”

We’ve all said it.

“It is what it is.”

Often it slips out, without a second thought, after a setback, a tough conversation, or when something feels out of our hands.

Sometimes, it’s an innocent comment. Other times, it’s a quiet surrender.

But let’s be honest – this isn’t just a saying. It’s actually a mindset……And not always a very helpful one.

When we say “It is what it is” as a full stop final statement, rather than a passing comment, we risk convincing ourselves that things can’t be changed.

That our circumstances are set in stone.

That taking action is pointless.

And, in my view, that’s where it gets dangerous for us.

Because here’s the thing: you might not be able to control the weather, but you can control your response. You get to choose how you think about it, how you act, and what you learn from the actions you take. That’s where your power lies.

What I have observed about the “It is what it is” mindset, especially when used too often, is that it can become a free pass for giving up.

For not trying again.

For avoiding responsibility.

It makes it easier to blame others, to step back from growth, and to let fear (or fatigue) do the decision-making.

Yes, acceptance matters. But so does action.

This isn’t about toxic positivity or pretending things don’t suck sometimes. It’s about reminding yourself that while you can’t always choose what happens to you, you can choose how you show up in response.

So next time you catch yourself saying “It is what it is,” try this instead:
✔️ What part of this can I influence?
✔️ What can I learn here?
✔️ What’s the next smallest step I can take?

This mindset – of reflection, accountability and choice – is what leads to real growth.

And if you’re ready to stop surrendering your power and start choosing more consciously, let’s connect. I’d love to support your next bold step.
