We all know someone who has a talent for testing. They know exactly which buttons to push, where these buttons are, which lines to blur, and how to make it all seem like no big deal.
These people are manipulators and here is the truth: they’re not only pushing your buttons – in reality they’re checking your boundaries.
Manipulators are watching how you respond. If you fold, they push further. When you hold steady, they back off.
A reminder that boundaries are your personal playbook. Your boundaries teach others how to treat you. And whether it’s at work, at home, or out in the world, holding your line, holding your boundary absolutely matters.
Today I am sharing with you three classic manipulator moves plus some coaching around how to deal with them like the grounded, switched-on leader you are:
🧍♀️ The Personal Space Test
They step too close in the hope of unsettling you.
What to do: Take a half-step back, hold eye contact, and keep talking normally.
Your silence says, “I’ll reset my comfort zone when you cross it.” It also shows you’re not easily rattled.
🎯 The Backhanded Compliment
“You’re surprisingly articulate for someone who loves rugby league.”
A subtle jab designed to chip at your confidence, so you start performing for their approval.
What to do: Stay calm. Take them literally. Ask, “I appreciate clarity. What surprises you?”
You’ve just made them responsible for their words and taken the power back.
⏰ The Late Arrival
First meeting, and they stroll in 15 minutes late with no apology. It’s not disorganisation; it’s a test.
What to do: Greet them neutrally: “Glad you’re here. I’ve got a hard stop at 11:30, so let’s jump in.”
You haven’t scolded them, and you haven’t rewarded them. You’ve protected your time. That’s a boundary they’ll remember.
Manipulators are usually really good at reading people.
Your job isn’t to call them out. Your job is to hold your line with calm, quiet strength.
You have got this.
If you’re ready to sharpen your boundaries and lead with clarity and confidence, let’s connect.
